Overview
This project addressed the growing challenge of information overload in mobile and on-the-move contexts, where users need timely, relevant, and actionable information rather than large volumes of unstructured data. IN2 contributed its expertise in media asset management, semantic information processing, and mobile content services to explore new ways of aggregating, interlinking, and delivering dynamic information in open mobile environments.
IN2 focused on developing methods and platforms for harvesting heterogeneous data sources, including social media streams, RSS feeds, multimedia content, and open data. By building on its existing technologies such as IM3I and FollowThePlace, IN2 supported the semantic enrichment of media with contextual metadata—particularly location and time—enabling richer understanding and smarter retrieval of information.
A core aspect of the work was situation-aware information provisioning, where user context, location, goals, and preferences are taken into account to deliver personalised results. IN2 contributed to models and workflows that support dynamic information interlinking, real-time updates, and faceted search, allowing users to discover relevant content even in unfamiliar environments such as transport hubs, cities, or tourist destinations.
Through close collaboration with the Pervasive Computing Research Centre at University Ulster, the project combined applied research with real-world use cases, laying the groundwork for scalable mobile services that support tourism, community engagement, and local information ecosystems. The outcomes strengthened IN2’s capability to translate research on semantic technologies and mobile computing into market-relevant digital platforms.
