Overview
ImaGeo was a European research project that explored how image understanding, geo-location, and semantic technologies can transform the way people discover and experience places. Building on the rapid adoption of GNSS-enabled mobile devices, the project introduced new interaction paradigms where users could capture an image of a scene or object and instantly retrieve contextual, location-based information related to it (download project's brochure).
IN2 played a central role in the design and implementation of the ImaGeo platform, focusing on the integration of image analysis, geo-temporal metadata, and multimedia content into a cohesive web and mobile service. IN2 contributed to transforming visual similarity search and object recognition outputs into structured, searchable media experiences, enabling images to act as entry points for exploration rather than static assets.
A key contribution from IN2 was the development of scalable media management and browsing workflows that linked images along time, space, and context. This allowed users to navigate immersive networks of content and supported use cases across pre-trip planning, on-the-spot discovery, and post-trip reflection. The platform blended user-generated experiences with existing cultural and touristic archives, enriching both with real-world context. The project formed the basis for our FollowThePlace service.
Alongside IN2, as the project's scientific and technical manager, the following organisations formed the consortium:
- Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, The Netherlands (Coordinator)
- Spring Technologies GmbH, Germany
- Neos Srl, Italy
