Project - IM3I+ -- Pushing multimedia research into practice

Turning intelligent multimedia research into scalable, real-world digital platforms.

Overview

IM3I+ (Intelligent Multimedia Management and Interaction) built on earlier IM3I research to advance scalable, intelligent multimedia management services for the web. The project addressed the growing need to handle large volumes of heterogeneous media—videos, images, audio, documents, and social content—by combining semantic technologies, service-oriented architectures, and user-centric interaction models.

Within the project, IN2 played a central role in designing and implementing the multimedia management and publishing platform, focusing on real-world applicability and scalability. IN2 contributed to the evolution of a service-oriented, cloud-ready architecture that enabled media ingestion, processing, annotation, indexing, and delivery across different use cases and sectors.

A key focus of IN2’s work was the integration of intelligent media analysis and interaction services, allowing content to be enriched with metadata, searched semantically, and reused across channels. This included workflows for managing audiovisual content at scale and exposing media services through modular components that could be deployed flexibly in research and commercial environments.

Through IM3I+, IN2 strengthened the link between research innovation and market-ready platforms, validating its technologies through pilots and preparing them for reuse in commercial products. The project reinforced IN2’s expertise in transforming advanced multimedia research into robust, extensible digital services that support engagement, discovery, and storytelling.

IM3I+ demonstrated and implemented showcases built upon a flexible framework for importing, analysing, annotating, searching and publishing multimedia documents and collections. This framework, branded then as ONmeedia, became largely IN2's MyMeedia platform.

Alongside IN2, as the project Coordinator, the following organisations formed the consortium:

  • Spring Techno GmbH & Co. KG, Germany
  • Music Information Centre Austria, Austria
