Wrapping Up 5Dculture: A Groundbreaking Journey into 3D Cultural Heritage
As the 5Dculture project draws to a close, we at IN2 reflect on an incredible journey of innovation, collaboration, and achievement. It’s been an honour for our team to coordinate this ambitious project and work alongside a consortium of talented partners to push the boundaries of 3D cultural heritage digitization and reuse.
🚀 Together, we’ve laid the groundwork for a more enriched European data space for cultural heritage, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and advanced methodologies.

A Transformative Project for Cultural Heritage
5Dculture set out with a bold vision: to unlock the potential of 3D cultural heritage and make it more accessible to a wide range of users, from cultural institutions and researchers to the general public. By combining AI-based tools, 3D digitization, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), we achieved a significant step forward in improving how Europe’s rich cultural heritage can be experienced and preserved.
💪📚 Throughout the project, we developed new tools, workflows, guidelines and delivered training that increased the capacity of cultural institutions in digitizing their 3D assets and integrating them into the broader common data space for cultural heritage. We worked closely with Europeana and key stakeholders to ensure the 5Dculture outcomes would be both impactful and sustainable for years to come.

Our personal highlight
🔥 For our IN2 team the focus has been on the WEAVEx tool for digital curation and storytelling, which now can support the creation of XR experiences. Together with our partners in Slovenia we demonstrated this through a new physical-digital cultural tourism product: Holographic Postcards. These offer a cost-effective, unique and engaging way to present information, capturing the attention of visitors, particularly younger generations.
Collaboration at the Heart of Success
🤝🌟 The success of 5Dculture would not have been possible without the passion and expertise of all our partners. At IN2, we are incredibly proud to have collaborated with a diverse group of professionals—each bringing a unique perspective and skill set to the table. This collaborative spirit allowed us to solve complex challenges, share knowledge, and produce tangible results that exceeded expectations.
From creating user-friendly tools to developing innovative 3D workflows, the project outcomes are already being adopted by cultural heritage institutions, helping them bring their collections to life in new and engaging ways. These achievements are a testament to what can be accomplished when the right blend of expertise, technology, and vision comes together.
Looking Ahead
While 5Dculture may be coming to an end, its impact will live on. The tools, guidelines, and insights developed during the project will continue to support cultural institutions on their 3D digitization journeys. We are excited to see how the results of 5Dculture will inspire further innovation in the sector and contribute to the ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Europe’s cultural heritage.

IN2 continues to work closely with Europeana and the European Data Space for Cultural Heritage (DSCH), with two new projects starting in February 2025:
- 3DBigDataSpace, which aims to significantly enlarging the number of high-quality 3D content in the DSCH; and
- XRculture, which aims to enrich the DSCH through innovative 3D AI-based digitization methods and Extended Reality usage scenarios.
Moreover, IN2's collaboration with leading experts in the field of 3D continues also in the framework of the 3D-4CH Online Competence Center for 3D. Read more about it in this announcement.
🙌💫 On behalf of everyone at IN2, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our project partners, stakeholders, and supporters. It has been an extraordinary experience, and we look forward to continuing our shared mission to make cultural heritage more accessible, engaging, and enduring for future generations.
